What Freeze-Frame Data Means

Freeze-frame data is a snapshot of operating conditions saved when a fault was detected. It can make a code much more useful.

What It Can Show

  • Engine RPM, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, load, fuel trim, and other values depending on the vehicle and scanner.
  • Whether the fault happened cold, hot, at idle, under load, or at highway speed.
  • Clues that help separate an occasional fault from a repeated condition.

Why It Matters

  • A P0171 lean code at idle points differently than the same code under heavy acceleration.
  • A misfire at cold start may suggest different causes than a misfire at high load.
  • Freeze-frame data helps a mechanic reproduce the condition instead of guessing from the code name alone.

What To Do

  • Photograph or write down freeze-frame data before clearing codes.
  • Share the data with the shop along with symptoms and recent repairs.
  • Do not assume one freeze-frame value proves a part is bad by itself.
