Mechanic Visit Checklist

A clear symptom story can save diagnostic time, reduce misunderstandings, and help a shop decide what to inspect first.

Before You Go

  • Write down when the symptom started and whether it is getting worse.
  • Take photos or short videos of leaks, smoke, warning lights, or noises when it is safe to do so.
  • Record OBD-II codes before clearing anything, including pending and permanent codes if your scanner shows them.
  • Check your owner's manual for model-specific warning light meanings and towing guidance.

What To Tell The Shop

  • When it happens: cold start, idle, acceleration, braking, turning, highway, traffic, rain, heat, or cold.
  • How often it happens: once, intermittent, every drive, only after warm-up, or only after sitting overnight.
  • What changed recently: fuel, battery, tires, oil change, brake work, collision, weather, or any previous repair.
  • Whether any warning light flashed, stayed steady, disappeared, or returned after clearing codes.

Useful Questions

  • What tests confirmed the failed part?
  • Are there related parts or wiring checks that should be inspected before replacement?
  • Is the car safe to drive until the repair?
  • Can I see the old part, scan report, pressure reading, or test result?
