Stored vs Pending vs Permanent Codes
A scanner may show more than one code status. Understanding the status helps you decide what is active, what is being watched, and what may remain after clearing.
Stored Codes
- A stored code means the vehicle confirmed a fault strongly enough to save it.
- Stored codes often turn on the check engine light, depending on the fault and monitor.
- Record stored codes before clearing because they can include useful freeze-frame data.
Pending Codes
- A pending code means the vehicle saw a possible fault but may need another drive cycle to confirm it.
- Pending codes can explain intermittent symptoms before a light stays on.
- Do not ignore pending misfire, fuel trim, or overheating-related codes when symptoms are present.
Permanent Codes
- A permanent code may remain after clearing until the vehicle runs and passes the required self-test.
- Permanent codes can affect emissions inspection readiness.
- Clearing codes repeatedly rarely helps; the underlying monitor must pass.
