Serpentine Belt

The serpentine belt drives accessories such as the alternator, power steering pump, water pump on some engines, and AC compressor.

What it does

Transfers engine rotation to accessory pulleys so charging, cooling, steering assist, and air conditioning can operate.

Failure signs

  • Squealing under the hood
  • Battery light
  • Power steering assist loss
  • Overheating on some engines
  • Cracked or glazed belt

Maintenance notes

  • Inspect for cracks, glazing, frayed ribs, and contamination.
  • Check belt tensioner and pulleys when a belt repeatedly slips.
  • Stop driving if belt loss causes overheating or charging failure.
