How to Safely Inspect Fluid Leaks

Fluid color, location, smell, and level change can help narrow down a leak, but safety matters more than finding the exact source at home.

Start Safely

  • Park on a level surface away from traffic.
  • Do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Avoid touching hot exhaust, brakes, or engine parts.
  • Keep children and pets away from leaked fluids.

Useful Clues

  • Place clean cardboard under the parked car to see drip location.
  • Note color: clear water, amber oil, red or amber transmission fluid, green/orange/pink coolant, or clear brake fluid.
  • Check whether the fluid level is dropping, but follow the owner's manual and wait for the engine to cool where required.

When To Stop Driving

  • Brake fluid leaks, fuel leaks, major coolant loss, oil pressure warning, or heavy transmission fluid loss should be treated urgently.
  • Tow if steering, braking, overheating, or smoke appears.
  • Tell the mechanic where the drip lands relative to the wheels and engine.
