How to Describe Car Noises to a Mechanic

Noise descriptions are most useful when they include when, where, and how the sound changes.

Describe The Sound

  • Use plain words: squeak, grind, hum, clunk, rattle, tick, knock, scrape, or hiss.
  • Say whether it is rhythmic with speed or engine RPM.
  • Record a short video if safe.
  • Note whether it is getting louder over time.

Describe The Condition

  • Cold start or warm engine.
  • Idle, acceleration, braking, turning, bumps, or highway speed.
  • Driver side, passenger side, front, rear, under hood, or under car.
  • Wet weather, cold weather, or after a recent repair.

Helpful Phrases

  • It happens only when braking.
  • It gets faster as the car speeds up.
  • It changes when turning left.
  • It disappears after the engine warms up.
