How to Describe Car Noises to a Mechanic
Noise descriptions are most useful when they include when, where, and how the sound changes.
Describe The Sound
- Use plain words: squeak, grind, hum, clunk, rattle, tick, knock, scrape, or hiss.
- Say whether it is rhythmic with speed or engine RPM.
- Record a short video if safe.
- Note whether it is getting louder over time.
Describe The Condition
- Cold start or warm engine.
- Idle, acceleration, braking, turning, bumps, or highway speed.
- Driver side, passenger side, front, rear, under hood, or under car.
- Wet weather, cold weather, or after a recent repair.
Helpful Phrases
- It happens only when braking.
- It gets faster as the car speeds up.
- It changes when turning left.
- It disappears after the engine warms up.
