How to Check Tire Pressure
Tire pressure is a simple check that can change braking, steering, tire life, and warning light behavior.
Use The Correct Number
- Use the pressure on the driver's door placard, not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall.
- Check tires when cold if possible.
- Remember the spare tire if the vehicle has one.
- Set all tires to the correct specification for the load and vehicle.
What Low Pressure Can Cause
- Low tire pressure warning.
- Pulling, wandering, or poor fuel economy.
- Uneven tire wear and overheating.
- Poor wet grip and longer stopping distance.
When To Inspect Further
- If one tire loses pressure repeatedly, check for punctures, valve leaks, wheel damage, or bead leaks.
- Do not keep driving on a very low tire.
- Replace tires with bulges, exposed cords, severe cracking, or unsafe tread depth.
