How to Check Tire Pressure

Tire pressure is a simple check that can change braking, steering, tire life, and warning light behavior.

Use The Correct Number

  • Use the pressure on the driver's door placard, not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall.
  • Check tires when cold if possible.
  • Remember the spare tire if the vehicle has one.
  • Set all tires to the correct specification for the load and vehicle.

What Low Pressure Can Cause

  • Low tire pressure warning.
  • Pulling, wandering, or poor fuel economy.
  • Uneven tire wear and overheating.
  • Poor wet grip and longer stopping distance.

When To Inspect Further

  • If one tire loses pressure repeatedly, check for punctures, valve leaks, wheel damage, or bead leaks.
  • Do not keep driving on a very low tire.
  • Replace tires with bulges, exposed cords, severe cracking, or unsafe tread depth.
