How to Check Engine Oil

Oil level is one of the most useful basic checks, but the correct method varies by vehicle.

Before Checking

  • Park on level ground.
  • Follow the owner's manual for hot, warm, or cold checking procedure.
  • Wait a few minutes after shutting off the engine if the manual calls for it.
  • Use a clean towel and avoid dirt entering the dipstick tube.

What To Look For

  • Oil below the safe mark means topping up may be needed before driving further.
  • Oil that is milky, foamy, or smells strongly of fuel should be inspected.
  • Fast oil loss, smoke, or oil pressure warning is urgent.
  • Do not overfill; too much oil can also cause problems.

What To Tell A Mechanic

  • How much oil was needed to reach the safe range.
  • How often the level drops.
  • Whether smoke, leaks, ticking, or oil pressure warnings appear.
  • Whether the issue began after an oil change or repair.
