Basic DIY Safety Rules for Car Checks

Many basic checks are safe when done carefully, but vehicles are heavy, hot, electrical, chemical, and sometimes unpredictable.

Before You Start

  • Work on level ground with good light and ventilation.
  • Keep loose clothing, hair, and jewelry away from belts, fans, and pulleys.
  • Use eye protection and gloves when handling fluids or batteries.
  • Read the owner's manual before opening caps or disconnecting parts.

Never Compromise

  • Never get under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Never open a hot radiator cap.
  • Never touch brake or exhaust parts right after driving.
  • Never install a larger fuse to replace a blowing fuse.

Know When To Stop

  • Stop if the task needs lifting, fuel system opening, airbag wiring, brake hydraulics, high-voltage hybrid parts, or programming tools.
  • Stop if you are unsure whether the car is stable, cool, or electrically safe.
  • A safe handoff to a mechanic is better than turning a small issue into an injury.
